Georges Bizet

est un compositeur français du XIXe siècle, figure phare de la musique lyrique française et l'auteur de l'un des opéras les plus joués au monde, Carmen.
Issu d'une famille de musiciens, Bizet entre au Conservatoire de Paris à l'âge de 9 ans.
Après avoir remporté le Prix de Rome avec sa cantate Clovis et Clotilde il s'installe pour un temps à la Villa Medicis, où il écrit quelques oeuvres et s'épanche de la Belle Rome, pour laquelle il compose d'ailleurs plus tard la Symphonie « Roma ». Georges Bizet

is a 19th-century French composer, a leading figure in French opera music and the author of one of the most performed operas in the world, Carmen.
Coming from a family of musicians, Bizet entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of 9.
After winning the Prix de Rome with his cantata Clovis et Clotilde, he moved for a time to the Villa Medicis, where he wrote some works and developed a passion for Belle Rome, for which he later composed the Symphony «Roma». Back in Paris, an envied pianist of the virtuoso Liszt, he focuses on the transcription of piano works so as not to sink into precariousness.
After the war of 1870 he became chief of hearts at the opera and then head of singing at the Opéra comique which ordered him Carmen. Tchaikovsky in prophet announces that «within ten years, Carmen would be the most famous opera of all the planet». Bizet died of a heart attack in Bougival on the night of 2-3 June, at the age of 36.
Described by Nietzche as a «Mediterranean» artist, Bizet succeeded in painting marvelously the different atmospheres and cultures of southern France (the Arlésienne), Andalusian Spain (Carmen) and the Maghreb (Djamileh), without having left Paris. Handling the techniques of composition with brilliance and audacity, Bizet shows a certain insolence towards musical academism, he grants himself tonal freedoms, and gives himself as leitmotif: «dissonances above all».
