Informations sur le sujet du timbre

La Cathédrale de la Nativité

est la cathédrale orthodoxe du diocèse. Elle est vouée à la Nativité du Seigneur. Elle se trouve au bord du parc de l’Esplanade.
La cathédrale a été érigée selon les plans de Nikolaï Tchaguine dans le style néo-byzantin entre 1876 et 1883, construite avec la bénédiction du tsar Alexandre II à l’initiative du gouverneur-général local le prince Bagration et de l’évêque Benjamin Kareline alors que la Lettonie faisait partie de l’Empire russe. La cathédrale de la Nativité du Christ est renommée pour son iconographie dont une part a été réalisée par Vassili Verechtchaguine. Au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, les troupes allemandes occupèrent Riga et transformèrent cette cathédrale orthodoxe en église luthérienne. Pendant la période d’Indépendance de la Lettonie de l’entre-deux-guerres, la cathédrale de la Nativité du Christ redevint une cathédrale orthodoxe en 1921. Les autorités municipales de la république socialiste soviétique de Lettonie fermèrent la cathédrale en 1961 pendant la période Khrouchtchev en URSS. Elles convertirent le bâtiment en planétarium. La cathédrale a été rendue au culte orthodoxe depuis que la Lettonie a regagné son indépendance vis-à-vis de l’Union soviétique, disparue en 1991.

The Cathedral of the Nativity

is the Orthodox Cathedral of the diocese and dedicated to the Nativity of the Lord. It is located on the edge of the Esplanade park.
The cathedral was built according to the plans of Nikolai Tchaguine in neo-Byzantine style between 1876 and 1883, built with the blessing of Tsar Alexander II at the initiative of the governor-local general Prince Bagration and bishop Benjamin Kareline while Latvia was part of the Russian Empire. The cathedral of the Nativity of Christ is famous for its iconography, part of which was made by Vassili Verechtchaguine. During the First World War, German troops occupied Riga and transformed this Orthodox cathedral into a Lutheran church. During the period of Latvia’s independence between the two world wars, the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ was converted into an Orthodox cathedral in 1921. The municipal authorities of the Latvian SSR closed the cathedral in 1961 during the Khrushchev period in the USSR. They converted the building into a planetarium. The cathedral has been returned to orthodox worship since Latvia regained its independence from the Soviet Union, which disappeared in 1991.
